The Late William ACHESON
~

William Acheson, who died on New Year`s day, was born in the County Fermanagh, Ireland, Feb. 1st, 1921, and married to Christina Fallis on Feb. 28,1847, who died Jan. 15th 1907.

He left Ireland on April 14th,1850, coming across in 28 days. He stayed at Madoc for some time, then came to Caledon where he lived 3 years.

In 1853 he settled on lot 205, 2nd range, Artemesia. Some years later he moved to the farm now owned by Mr. Aaron Jordan at Inistioge. While here he gave his heart to God and joined the Methodist Church at Inistioge, of which he has since been a member. He loved his Bible and death had no terrors for him.

In 1863 he moved to Lot 205, 3rd range, Proton, where he resided until his decease.

He was a strong man both mentally and physically and enjoyed almost unbroken health up to the last. Death came naturally from old age.

Interment took place at the Bethel cemetery on Jan. 3rd where an impressive service was conducted by Revs. T. Laidlaw, of Inistioge, and J. J. Ferguson of Dundalk. Those who attended from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John Agnew and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fawcett, of Alliston; Mr. Geo. Rutherford and Miss Elitha, of Shelburne, Mr. Gilles of .....(bottom torn off)

William ACHESON's daughter, Mary Jane ACHESON, was the mother of my maternal grandfather, George Albert JOHNSON (born JOHNSTON). So he would be my great great grandfather.

  1. Isn't wonderful when an obituary is filled with so much information about a person. It is great that you also have a photo.

I am not sure if the Dundalk Herald has been microfilmed for that date. Have you checked? If not, I could check for you and if it is, I might be able to get the rest of the article for you.

  2. Hi Janet - It really is great. This obit and photograph is courtesy of a cousin that I found on the net in January 2003 while I was searching for my Mom's 90th birthday.
I really appreciate your offer. I haven't checked. That's good of you to offer your assitance.

    Thanks very much.
PS I remember checking your site because it was Grey County and I found one JOHNSTON on it. Coincidence!

  3. Hi Carole
The archives - Grey Roots doesn't have the Dundalk Herald on microfilm.
The Dundalk Herald has been transcribed from September 14, 1883 - January 6, 1910. A copy is a the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library, so I will look at it when I go next to the library. I don't know if they are full transcriptions of the bmds.

I presume you have seen/have the History of Dundalk, it has several pages on the Achesons with photos.

  4. Hello again
That will be great if you can do a lookup at the Library.
No I haven't seen a copy of the History of Dundalk. It would be interesting to have a look at it. My connection to the Acheson family is by my maternal great grandmother, Mary Jane Acheson, married to Christopher Johnston. I know that at the time of her death in 1901, Christopher sold their homestead to Mary Jane's sister Rachael.
Then he retired to Dundalk were he spent the rest of his life. He died February 1925. He may also be mentioned in the History of Dundalk.
Thanks again for being in touch.

  5. Hi Carole
The transcription of the Dundalk Herald that we have in the Owen Sound library ends the week before the above issue. When I am in next, I will check re the surname.

I emailed the library in Dundalk to ask about the newspaper. She says they have it from 1910 on. It might be spring before I get down that way, but I would be willing to check the newspaper and also to check the family file for you.

  7. Hi Carole
I finally made it to the Dundalk Library (Southgate). There is no issue for the 6th on microfilm according to the index they had. I looked through the Acheson file. It had many more recent obituaries. There are several books about the Acheson families. I don't know if you have seen them. The Owen Sound library has several of them written by Bonnie Anderson. Is there any way I can contact you off the blog with more information?

  8. Hi Janet
Good of you to follow-up on the Dundalk Herald. Any other information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Yes - I know Bonnie Acheson.
Due to health reasons, I haven't been blogging for quite some time, but I'm still slowly building my family tree on Tribal Pages. I started with a handwritten tree, so I haven't imported any GEDCOMs. That would over-write what I had entered.
    Thanks for remembering me!
