The Gates Family:
"Edmund, James and Levi Gates all served in the Civil War. On August 9, 1862, Levi enlisted for a three-year term in Company B 36th Iowa Infantry, a volunteer regiment organized by Mayor A. H. Hamilton in Wapello County.
Levi was wounded April 25, 1864 in the Battle of Marks' Mills, Arkansas, and left in the field for dead. When night came he crawled into a deserted cabin. A colored woman cared for him until he was taken to the Marks' Mills Rebel Prison where he was treated by both Rebel and Union doctors. Later he received treatment at hospitals in Little Rock, Arkansas and Keokuk, Iowa. After he recovered, he rejoined his regiment and served until he was discharged August 24, 1865."
